(A CASE STUDY OF ZENITH BANK PLC IN ENUGU)
ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to ascertain the impact of motivation an employee’s productivity in the Nigeria banking industry. To this effect, it sought to determine the effectiveness of zenith Bank Plc motivation on employee’s productivity with the view to helping existing Banking Institution in  maximizing employees in achieving the goals and objectives of the banking sector.  What motivates employee? What cause low production, the prospect of employee motivation in achieving the goals and objectives of financial institution and determine to what extent its productive efficiency of bank contribute worker compensation to produce greater quality and quality of work.
The study was conducted at the Head Office of Zenith Bank and some branches within Lagos metropolis.  All the employee at these various branches of the bank constituted the population for the study  from which the required sample size was drawn.
A survey method using a structured questionnaire was sued in this study.  Ninety five questionnaires were distributed and ninety two were collected through a face to face technique, which is cheaper and faster compared to mail method of administration questionnaire.  The findings were tabulated and analyzed with percentages, means and standard deviations and the findings revealed that motivation has increased performance of employee productivity.  This implies that the importance of welfare packages such as money, bonuses or other things that may be given to people for performance cannot be over looked as motivators and more so employees are likely to be more committed toward achieving set objectives if they are highly motivated through the use of fringe benefits, health care etc.

CHAPTER ONE 
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Some of the major concern of management be it business, government or charitable organization are production and motivation of workers. 
These two aspects of management have scientific orienatation. The pioneer contribution to theses scientific terms of management includes Taylor, Gnati and Frank Gilberth. Their common interest was largely to improve productivity through efficient and effective methods. Productivity can be define as the input/out put ration within a time period with due consideration for quality. This definition can be applied to the productivity of organization, managers, staff personnel and workers. The word “motive” is derived from the Latin word “movers” meaning to “move”. Motivation is a mental process by which people are moved or induced to goal directed action. It helps in explaining why people behave the way they do. Thus motivation is a key concept in explaining behaviors because a motivated behavior is a goal gathers.
According to Robbins, (1998,9.168) in his term paper says motivation is willingness to exert high levels of effort towards organizational conditioned by the ability to satiety individual needs. Motivation of employees is therefore a crucial concern of the management in order to ensure the execution of the planned goals and objectives of an organization. 
Many authors have tired to defines the concept of motivation. According to the third edition of the Longman dictionary of contemporary Engus, (1990. 45) motivation is the eagerness and willingness to do something needing to be told or forced to do it. Also, Kreitner 91995,21) defined motivation as the psychological process that gives employees behavior purpose and direction. For the purpose of this project, therefore motivation is operationally defined as the inner force that drives and individual to accomplish personal and organizational goal. 
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study centre on how to indue worker in an organization to put in their best. It is the role of the manager to integrate the organizations variable with the human variables for effectiveness and efficiency. The main problem of this study, therefore, is own productivity in Zenith bank plc as a basis for studding the impact of motivation on employees. However, the sub-problems are enumerated below as:
I. Inadequate financial reward and fringe benefits
II. Poor working environment and welfare scheme
III. Inadequate training and development of the employees.
IV. Lack of modern technology on employee 
1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The study ultimately seek to 
1) Examine the impact of financial rewards and fringe benefits on employees productivity
2) Evaluate the impact of the working environment and welfare scheme on employees productivity.
3) Examine the effects of training and development on employees productivity
4) Examine the effect of modern technology on employees productivity in the work environment and to grapple with the practical problem about how to inspire people to greater efforts by the provision of excellent motivational incentives to the employee.
5) The research will contribute to literature and knowledge on the subject and generally serves as a reference material to professionals involved in adopting motivation process and as well to other students carring out academic research.
6) The study is aimed at alleviating controversy as to whether or not jobs should be designed to suit job satisfaction backed with appropriate training needs which would no doubt bring out potentials in each of the employees, thus match up increased productivity of the organization demand for these category of employees in global world. 
1.4 THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This research work focuses mainly on the impact of motivation on employees productivity in Zenith bank plc, Enugu. Equally, the study will consider other aspects of relations like job satisfaction, communication, individual atwork, however the study will not consider problems on accounting system. Equally, the study will not consider zenith banks that are located outside Enugu metropolis. 
1.5 RESEARCH QUESTION
1. Is it true that adequate financial reward and fringe benefit improve employees productivity?

1.6 LIMITATIONS 
In carrying this study, the following assumptions were made:
1) That data shall be sough and obtained without undue restrictions by officials of the bank to be studied
2) That the impact of motivation on employees productivity in zenith bank plc studied shall represent a fair view of all cases in Enugu and the conclusion reached can be generalized to the parts of the country.
